The Barter System Pays Off!

A reader just sent in this terrific example of how creative thinking can save a lot of time and money--for all parties involved.

"Today our annual chimney cleaning was scheduled. This time I'd hired a new chimney sweep, a local small business.

The owner himself arrived and, after taking a look at our chimney and woodstove, stated that he'd have to return with a helper because our chimney was only lined halfway, and the stove had to be pulled out.

As we chatted, I asked how much it would cost to fully line our chimney, thereby cutting our annual chimney cleaning costs by nearly 40% (not to mention the safety factor). The answer: $1800.

We continued to talk and I mentioned how I'd selected this company because they had a website. The owner then lamented the fact he had a huge list of customers but no system for contacting them, mailing postcards with special offers and reminders, collecting emails, etc.

Since that's what I do on the side as a home business, I explained various ways he could organize and take advantage of this list to keep his customers happy and guarantee repeat business.

I suddenly saw a great way to get my chimney liner and help this business owner at the same time. I suggested we barter our services. He'd get my consulting help and I'd get my chimney lined!

He agreed, and now I look forward to helping a local business become even more profitable. In return, I think I'll get a pretty good deal on chimney cleaning for years to come!"

This reader now has an extra $1800 to apply to debt, $1800 they were planning on spending for home improvement.

So...here's an assignment for you.

What are some items or services you need? What are some items or services you can offer in exchange?

Get bold and just offer to barter. Simply say, "Hey, I've got a great idea--why don't I do XXX for you in exchange for XXX that I need? We can help each other out."

What's the worst that can happen? You get a "no, thanks"?

Try it and let me know the results you get! I expect some GREAT stories, just like this one!
